Daily Habits to Improve Your Fertility

The ability to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy depends as much on the health of the man as it does on the woman.

As soon as you decide that you’d like to get pregnant, you can take a look at your lifestyle habits and see if there are improvements you can make to increase your fertility.

Here’s a (non-exhaustive) list of recommendations of what to implement and what to avoid to improve your chances.

Lifestyle Habits to Implement

  • Maintain a healthy weight. If either partner is overweight or underweight, it may take longer for you to conceive.

  • Participate in moderate exercise on a regular basis.

  • Eat whole, non-processed foods (prioritize plant-based foods rich in vitamins, iron, magnesium and other minerals, along with healthy oils and full fat dairy products, unless you have a dairy sensitivity).

  • Reduce your consumption of alcohol and caffeine, carbohydrates, refined sugars, and trans fats.

  • Take vitamin and mineral supplements to round out your diet (including folic acid).

  • Get enough sleep.

  • Find methods to help you manage daily stress (meditation, yoga, slow breathing).

  • Check to see if either partner has a food intolerance.

  • Reduce your exposure to endocrine disruptors (phtalates, Bisphenol A, pesticides, alkylphenol and nonylphenol, parabens, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated biphenyls).

Lifestyle Habits to Avoid

  • Abstain from smoking and taking recreational drugs.

  • Avoid overheating the testicles (wearing pants and underwear that are too tight, staying too long in the spa or hot bath, long periods of sitting at the office or in the car, wearing cycling shorts for long bike rides…).

  • Avoid keeping your cell phone in your pocket, and don’t use a laptop connected to wifi near the genitals

Sexual Habits to Improve Your Chances of Conceiving

  • Have sex approximately every two days during the fertile window that you’ve identified with the Symptothermal Method, especially when cervical mucus is reaching its peak.

  • Encourage natural vaginal lubrication created by sexual excitement and adequate stimulation, a supportive environment and calm state of mind for both partners.

  • If you need lube, use lubs like Pre-Seed(R) ou Conceive-Plus(R) that will not kill sperm. Note that these lubes do not actually increase fertility, despite what they advertise.

Sexual Habits to Avoid If You Wish to Conceive

  • Avoid water-based or mineral oil-based lubricants. Also avoid saliva that contains digestive enzymes that might kill sperm.
